Why is Kargil Vijay Diwas celebrated? 

Every year, on Kargil Vijay Diwas, we honor the brave soldiers who fought in the Kargil War. This day is special because it marks India’s victory in the war and celebrates the courage, sacrifice, and determination of our soldiers. The war took place at the Kargil district in Jammu and Kashmir, which is located in northern India close to Pakistan’s frontier. The war started when Pakistani soldiers infiltrated Indian territory and seized control of the important military bases in Kargil. This led to war between Indian Army and Pakistani forces as India was forced to act to defend its territories.

Kargil Vijay Diwas is a celebration to commemorate the day that India succeeded in capturing all abandoned territories, and drove away the invaders. The war lasted for around two months and with intense fighting in difficult conditions. Soldiers faced extreme cold, high altitudes and challenging terrain. Despite the challenges the Indian Army fought bravely, with great determination and strength.

The Kargil War was a tough battle, but the courage that our troops displayed played an important part in the victory of India. Many soldiers lost their lives in the war and their sacrifices helped in protecting our nation. Indian Army fought in tough conditions, with numerous combats taking place at elevations that exceeded 16,000 feet. Soldiers were forced to climb mountains, and sometimes carry massive weapons and supplies all while facing the enemy. The determination, strength and devotion to their country displayed by the soldiers is inspiring us every day.

Celebrating Kargil Vijay Diwas

The biggest celebration takes place on the outskirts of New Delhi, where the Prime Minister, as well as other leaders, pay tribute to the dead soldiers. Soldiers from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force participate in ceremonies, and the national flag is hoisted to honor the brave hearts who fought in the war.
